Sans Souci House

Project Type

Housing

Date

2020

Nestled in the coastal suburb of Sans Souci in Sydney’s south, Sans Souci House is a thoughtful expansion and transformation of an existing home, designed to breathe new life into the space and strengthen its connection to Kogarah bay. This beautifully reimagined residence accommodates a blended family, balancing functionality with a sense of openness and warmth.
Created with a love for entertaining in mind, the home offers generous, welcoming spaces designed for enjoyment and connection. Expansive timber decking and an external pool overlook the deep blue waters of Kogarah Bay, providing breathtaking views and a perfect setting for relaxation. Inside, the addition includes three new bedrooms, a formal and butler’s kitchen, a media room, and a wine cellar, all thoughtfully arranged to capture stunning vistas of the bay’s deep blue waters.
Given the client’s passion for art, the home’s material palette takes a muted, gallery-like approach, creating a serene backdrop for their collection. White gallery walls showcase the artworks, while skylights bathe the expansive interiors in soft natural light, enhancing the dialogue between architecture, light, water, and art.
From the street, the residence presents a modest, single-storey facade, softened by a green wall and discreet car parking. Yet, as you step inside, the home reveals itself as a spacious, light-filled sanctuary, with soaring ceilings, carefully crafted voids, and lush internal courtyards.

Part of this project was undertaken during my time at BKA Architecture.
